Tony Sheldon - Bernadette

by Priscilla

Apr.24, 2009, under Cast Blog

Moving the show from Australia to London has involved some changes. For a start we are in a much smaller theatre and on a much smaller stage, so we’ve had to compress the Australian production. Trying to do the shows in the enormous shoes without bumping into each other and knocking the cast off stage into the orchestra pit has been the biggest challenge! The audience response has been amazing here, I wasn’t sure that they would get it, but here in the UK they laugh even more.

On a typical day I wake up and have breakfast checking my e mails from Australia. Then I check all the Broadway and London theatre websites seeing what’s new and what’s coming up, who’s in work and who’s out of work.

If I have about 3 hours I jump on a different bus and try to explore a different suburb of London. This is my way of discovering the city by getting lost each day and then finding my way around. I have seen some really beautiful suburbs and some not so beautiful suburbs!

I leave about 3:30pm to get in to the theatre for 4:30pm. I do my exercises in the theatre and then I have to start to get into make up by 5.00pm at the latest. My make up takes an hour and we then have a vocal warm up. After that I have to be put into my corset and have my hair all pinned up and that has to be done by the half hour call. So all in all it takes 3 hours to get ready for the show itself.

It was always going to be a yes when I was offered to come over and play the role of Bernadette in the West End production. I have never worked outside of Australia. The carrot of working in the West End has been dangled before, but it has never happened. My greatest concern was about whether they would choose to cast someone from England, but they decided to take a chance on me, which was such a thrill. The hardest thing was making sure I could afford to come. The move meant bringing my partner over, who wouldn’t be working for a year, so I’m supporting two people on one salary and contrary to what everyone thinks West End money isn’t that glittering! I actually had to take a substantial pay cut to come over. Those were obviously the considerations when taking the job, but the joy of being asked to come over and represent the show overrode all those other factors ultimately. If in the future I had the opportunity to go to Broadway with the show I would love to and it would be an honour to be considered, but we’re a long way from that.

A lot of people have commented on how the show is a non stop singing and dancing extravaganza, which does begin to take a toll and as a result I have learnt what I can and can’t do. I can’t go out and party after the show, I can’t drink or smoke anymore, which I used to! I have learnt that I have to get a certain amount of rest, particularly at the beginning of the week as one day off isn’t really enough. It’s all about pacing yourself, but I’ve had three years to come to terms with that.

The role of Bernadette calls on a lot of your skills as a performer. There’s the dance numbers, the acting and the singing! Obviously I love my little moment in Macarthur Park, because it is my one moment where I am really alone on the stage connecting with the audience in a quiet way. I look forward to trying to nail that and see if I could hear a pin drop in the audience. That’s when I know that I’ve got them, when they are not coughing or just sitting impatiently for the next big production number. It’s very exciting and satisfying.

Hi Tony, sad to see you’ve left the show. Don is good, but you made it for me, so it will never be the same! Good luck in future roles. Hope to see you in London again.

Will make extra special effort to see you on Broadway….they’ve gotta have you!!

Hi Tony, Congratulations on your wonderful success. I met your amazing mother last night after her Show at Studio 45. My mum performed in Vaudeville Theatre and also took me to see your Grandparents at the Tivoli. Toni talked about how excited she was to visit you in London recently. I believe you worked with Russel Stubbings, who I knew and danced with, but I wondered if you ever met my late cousin ‘Kelvin Coe’, from the Australian Ballet? I do understand when you talked about that ‘magic moment’ when you can hear a pin drop, and hold an audience in the palm of your hand. It only happened to me only once, during a performance as ‘Calamity Jane’, but it will happen for you many times over . Thank Tony for the opportunity to say, ‘Hi’.
Fondest Regards,

Mr Sheldon,

I was in London last week and went to see Priscilla two times, it would’ve been more but i had to go home. I live in Holland, but I’ll definitly be back soon. You are amazing, i became an instant fan, truly. You are also the sweetest guy when I met you two times at the stage door for an photo and an autograph. If they decide to take the show to broadway they HAVE to take you along with the show because you ARE the show and belong in the broadway version as well. I will see you there ;)

Thanks for Bernadette!

Kisses

Mr Sheldon,

I’m a crazy american who loves all things Australian. I had the extreme pleasure during my visit to Melbourne in November 2007 to see Priscilla the The Musical for the first time. I was hooked and could not wait to see it again. So, once I got home to Houston, Texas, I kept checking the internet hoping it would come to Broadway. Once I learned it was coming to London’s West End London and that you were going to continue in the role of Bernadette I could not be more excited! Yes, I flew all the way from Houston to London for a long weekend in just to see the Musical twm more times! Bravo to you, the cast and crew as it was just as fabulous as I remember from Melbourne. My greatest hope is you will be able to continue the role on the Broadway Stage. Your protrayal of Bernadette is wonderful, touching, funny and I can’t see any one else in the role! And when you get to Broadway, you can be sure I will be there to see it again and again.

Huge Fan, Danielle

We saw the show on Saturday night. Awesome, even better than Mama Mia and Hairspray - and that’s saying something. And I’m more into Ibsen than Lloyd-Webber or Macintosh.

It was such a coup to get La Donovan to take the part and, clearly, he does have some admirers in London Town. HOWEVER, if there has to be a star of the show it is you. Your performance was as moving as Terence Stamp’s but lest we not forget, that was a movie with the opportunity to take and retake and retake. You don’t have that pleasure and for that reason, there won’t be a stronger portrayal of Bernadette for the fopreseeable future: vulnerable, barbed, alone yet still fighting and finding strength wherever it presents itself.

A special massive applause too to the trio of principal backing singers. Not least for the gumption to scale the heights but for the sheer ruddy loveliness of their voices.

Brilliant. I’ll be shipping my mum down from Liverpool to see you in November. And who knows, maybe even my old dad, Bob, too!

My friend Dawn and I went to see the show last night, and it was fantastic. So much so, we will be coming again, hopefully in a box so we can dance along!

Thank you so much for coming over from Australia, I know the difference to Oz and here are incredible, and of course, here so expensive. You are a true star and I cannot recommend this musical to my friends enough.
