Dean Bryant - Associate Director

Dean’s recent directing credits include:  Virgins: A Musical Threesome and The Last Five Years (venues including 45 Downstairs, The Stables, Railway St/Q and a NSW tour). For The Last Five Years he received Green Room and Helpmann Award nominations as Best Director of a Musical.

He has worked as assistant director on Melbourne Theatre Company’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (including Sydney Theatre Company remount), Hitchcock Blonde and Urinetown (including STC remount).

With writing partner Mathew Frank he wrote the musical Prodigal, which premiered at Chapel off Chapel (Green Room Award Best Score) and became the first Australian musical produced in New York (Off-Broadway at the York Theatre Company, cast album on Jay Records). Their recent show Virgins: A Musical Threesome premiered at CUB Malthouse in 2007 (six Green Room nominations). Virgins toured Victoria and played the New York Music Theatre Festival as an invited show. Other musicals include The People in Your Pocket (Vic/NSW tours), Jumpin’ the Q (Old Fitz, AWGIE Best Musical nomination), The Virgin Wars (Next Wave Festival) and Once We Lived Here (Playbox workshop and Pratt Prize Commission Winner). Their adaptation of Sonya Hartnett’s award-winning book The Silver Donkey has completed two tours of USA high schools. A retrospective of their work, All Roads Lead to Home, was part of the 2004 Melbourne International Arts Festival.

Dean is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
