Matthew Wesley – Ensemble

by Priscilla

May.13, 2010, under Cast Blog

There are still things that are a bit nerve racking each night, but on the whole everything is going well. We had 4 weeks of rehearsal, but during those weeks we were on stage as well. The original cast were in rehearsals with us from an early stage, which helped. In an ideal world it could have been longer, particularly as you think you have it sorted and then you do it with the costumes and its totally different.

I graduated from college 3 years ago and went straight into South Pacific, then Chicago and a few other jobs before Priscilla. The worst costume for me at the beginning was the big crow dress, which I wear in the funeral scene. Getting used to that was really difficult. Before Priscilla I’d never worn heels or a dress. That is the most taxing part of the show, the costumes and the amount of costume changes.

I got an audition for Priscilla first time around, but I told my agent that I couldn’t do an Australian accent, so I didn’t go. By the time it came around again, I felt more comfortable. I went to the audition and saw the show that night and loved it. We had quite a few auditions and then you are on hold while they make their decision. When you are waiting it seems ages.

I love the funeral now that I’ve got to terms with the costume. I love Go West and watching the audiences’ reaction when the cannon goes off. I’ve never been in a show where you get such an amazing response from the audience at the end of the night.

Les girls in the high heels on the staircase is scary and I fell over on the fist night in the Gumby shoes and they’ve haunted me since then. I was getting ready for Poseidon and then the revolve started to move and I fell over and my feet were starting to go through the flitter and Steven Cleverly had to drag me back.

It has become a cliché, but it is one of the shows that you should come and see if you’ve had a bad day. If you want a good time with your mates, or want to be cheered up come and see Priscilla.

Matthew I don’t know how you lot change costumes so quickly, it must be a constant mad rush behind that stage. Having said that you lot are amazing and Priscilla is the best show me and my mates have seen EVER. You are all so passionate about the show which we can see in your performance. Well done and thank you for a fantastic night. I was the bloke you took up on stage and danced with tonight and gave the cheeky smiles too. :) :)
All the best. Aaron Prayter.
