John Brannoch - Frank

by Priscilla

Jan.22, 2010, under Cast Blog

As Frank I do get to use the F word quite a lot. Frank is pretty much the bad guy, if there is a bad guy in Priscilla. A lot of the characters are fighting towards something positive, where as Frank is one of the barriers to that along the way. It is fun playing Frank, because I play lots of other different parts in the show, a cupcake, a paintbrush, a show girl, so it is nice to come on and do something completely the opposite, an aggressive male.

A lot has changed since rehearsals. We’ve now gone through a lot of phases; in rehearsals everything was brand new and exciting, then we were started to find our feet with the show, before getting into our rhythm. Things always change, we’ve had a pregnancy in the cast and we’ve had a little bit of a cast change. Now we are coming up to the point where we are well into the run, but leading into a cast change. There will be some people leaving and some new people coming in. It will be a different, but exciting time.

There is something special about being in an original London cast, because you feel like you are creating something new, not just taking something over. A lot changed from the Australian production and we had a chance to put our stamp on it. So losing some of the people that were responsible for that in creating this massive phenomenon will be quite sad. It will also be exciting working with some new people, who will add a new energy. There’s a danger that when you’ve been running for 14 months you can lose some of your freshness and they will help by bringing something new to it.

I started off in Mamma Mia the international tour, which was great because I got to see the world. After that I went into Chicago before Priscilla. They are three very different shows. I mean Chicago was one costume all in black, which is the complete antithesis to Priscilla. No frills to the frilliest show in the West End.

My favourite part of the show and the rest of the cast will hate me for this, is Colour my World. I love being a paintbrush. I don’t why, but I get a kick out of it. When I eventually leave Priscilla I will miss the cast obviously and the fact we created something new which the British public have taken to their hearts and has gone from strength to strength. It’s rare to be involved in that kind of process. Come and see Priscilla because at the beginning of the New Year everyone is bit down and it’s the best way to pick yourself up, dancing paintbrushes!!
