Ask John Bowe - Bob - 2

by Priscilla

Aug.28, 2010, under Cast Blog

We asked you to send in your questions for John. Here are the second set of them and his answers.

What’s you favourite song in the show?

I was on this planet when Macarthur Park was a hit and I have had the good fortune to meet and eat with Richard Harris who was the singer who performed the song. So I love it’s extraordinariness. I also love We Belong, which is in a point of the show that is very moving when Felicia, Bernadette and Tick are demonstrating their companionship.

It seems on stage that the cast get on really well. Is it true offstage?

No. I hate them all! The teacher that first got me into school plays who is now 80 years old came to see the show last week. He was responsible for me getting into acting and he helped me a lot towards the end of my school days. His first comment about the show was that you could feel the love on the stage. I think that is a large reason for the success of the show, that chemistry between all of us and there is a lot of love. To me there are no cliques; I love the cast, staff and crew. It has been a fantastic experience for me. I will grieve when I leave, not for long, but I will grieve.

What other musicals or shows would you like to do in the future?

If it is something that I’m interested in, if it is something that I am excited about then I will try and do it. I can’t narrow myself, like with my career I’ve never allowed myself to be pigeon holed into one type of character or role. I’ve played all types of characters from good to bad, comedic to sinister. It’s one of the joys of being an actor and the tragedies as you finish a job and you are waiting for the phone to ring or to go for another meeting. I have 6 children and there’s no money coming in. It is a peril, but also an excitement.

What’s you favourite part of the show?

Well it’s not the kangaroo costume! The Mintys, it’s got to be. At no point is this show based in any kind of reality and the Mintys are surreal and extraordinary and I just adore them.

I saw John in a pub in Sussex today and wanted to say how much I have enjoyed his interpretation of Bob. But since it was a cast day off, I didn’t want to intrude! Re his comment on getting on well with the rest of the cast, he was indeed with another cast member, so the friendships are lovely to see. Thanks so much John for some superb shows and all the best! xx
