Gary Young - Assistant Stage Manager

by Priscilla

Oct.28, 2010, under Backstage Blog

There are four of us who help run the show from the wings backstage. So we deal with props, scenery, make sure the cast are safe throughout the whole performance and help the stage manager in dealing with any problems that occur during the show.

There’s a lot of potential of things to go wrong with Priscilla, because there are lots of props, a revolve, flying scenery and performers, and a big automated bus, so you have to be very vigilant. That was also one of the appeals for me, in that it is a challenging show to work on. It’s also a very good team of people to work with.

I worked on Zorro the musical in the West End and then I went on tour with it as Assistant Stage Manager. I’ve just finished fifteen months on Dirty Dancing as well. The route I took to get into theatre was 3 years at drama school doing stage management. You can just start crewing in smaller regional theatres and work your way up that way. I got a lucky break in that there was an e-mail that came into the university advertising an interim position at the National Theatre, which I applied for and luckily I got the job. That got me the foot through the door.

The best part of my job is the interaction with cast backstage, you get to know them and build relationships. My favourite parts of the show are the divas; they’re great and the bus, which is amazing.

People should come to Priscilla because they’ll have a great time. What is there not to love? The Kylie Medley, songs everyone knows and loves. You can’t fail to have a good time.

I’d love to have the opportunity to be a Stage Manager - I am the Stage Manager of the Jubilee International High School Theatre (my secondary school’s theatre!) but I imagine that it is nothing compared to working such a prestigious theatre as the Palace Theatre. One of the reasons I love it is the same reason as you - working with the cast and backstage crew and the relationship that you build up with them..

Is there a drama school that you can recommend? I’d LOVE for the opportunity!
