Aaron Johns – Vicki Vivacious

by Priscilla

Sep.30, 2011, under Backstage Blog

I host the fabulous Priscilla parties that we have and entertain the guests that have paid for that special experience. I initially got involved with Priscilla last year, when Nick Hardcastle who runs the parties contacted Ku Bar to host a Priscilla event for Soho Pink Sunday. I work for Ku Bar doing a drag act and so they asked me to double up for the day. After that Nick asked me if I’d like to get involved with the launch of the Priscilla Parties and a year later I’m still here doing it.

I’ve been doing a drag act for two years now, which started because I went to Gran Canaria for a lads holiday and saw how bad the drag was there. I’d been to drama school already and I wasn’t having much luck in drama auditions so I thought I’d see how I would get on as a drag queen. I started getting bookings and then it’s just escalated from there.

You really have to learn your trade if you are looking to become a drag queen. It’s probably best to do performances for your friends and family first in your living room and go to parties dressed in drag. If you sell yourself as a product and it’s half done or not right, you are not going to work again. I went to a lot of cabaret acts for six months before I started. Any spare time I had I was watching other acts. You learn so much from watching the best.

I absolutely love Don’t Leave Me This Way. I don’t know why, but that funeral scene is my favourite, the costumes are amazing. My all time favourite thing about Priscilla is the Divas. They are amazing. They are dressed amazingly and every single one of them on the show has the most incredible voice. I’m rather envious of them to be honest. I want to be a Diva. I also love MacArthur Park and Downtown, because it is such an incredible way to open the show with the Divas flying down at the beginning.

We have some great Priscilla parties in the stalls in a specially decorated area, with a bus, which is especially for the parties. It is such a great way to start the show and get you in the party mood. Choose Gay Tuesdays are also fabulous fun, where people also get to experience the Soho scene as well as meeting some members of the cast. We play some games, have a drink or two and eat some delicious cupcakes, before seeing the best show in the West End.
